Peter Obi is the Recognized Presidential Candidate of Labour Party - NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that the only recognized presidential candidate of the Labour Party is Peter Obi.

This was contained in a statement issued by the National President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

According to Wabba, the leadership of the Labour Party led by Barr. Julius Abure, a former trade union leader which produced Obi as the presidential candidate is the only acknowledged leadership by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and NLC.

The statement partly reads; “The leadership of the NLC and TUC recognize the leadership of the Labour Party led by Barr. Julius Abure, a former trade union leader and workers are part of the leadership.

“The NLC and TUC are aware of only one presidential primary which was held in Asaba, Delta State on 30th May 2022 and produced HE Peter Obi as its presidential candidate and standard-bearer.

“This, therefore, serves as a public disclaimer on Mr Calistus Okafor. We warn the general public to steer clear of Calistus Okafor and characters who might want to cash in on the popularity of the Labour Party to hoodwink, extort and swindle unsuspecting members of the public,” he said.

Recall, crisis brewed in the Labour Party when Calistus Okafor, chairman of another faction of the party filed a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1636/2021 before a Federal High Court days before Peter Obi was pronounced as the winner of the LP presidential primary.

On May 30, the presiding judge of the case, Inyang Ekwo, in a May 30 judgement ordered that the LP and some of its executives be served with a fresh suit challenging the party’s leadership, after which the matter was adjourned till June 30 for further mention.

Following that, on June 8, 2022, Calistus Okafo’s faction held a presidential election in Abuja and Jude Ezenwafor who was the sole aspirant was elected through affirmation.

Ezenwafor is said to be a former aide to Willie Obiano, former governor of Anambra, and also served under Peter Obi while he was Governor of the state.
Okafor, factional chairman of the LP of the party, described the candidate as “a man of integrity”.

“Having met all the requirements of the party, we hereby affirm you to be the presidential candidate of the Labour Party come 2023,” he said.
