Dr Dakum Commends FG on Cancer Diagnose & Treatment Centres, Calls on State Government to Cue in

The globe marks World Cancer Day, today, 4th February, 2025. In light of this, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, School of Medicine Maryland University Baltimore, USA; the Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Human Virology Nigeria, IHVN, and Plateau State Labour Party, LP, governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections, Professor Patrick Sunday Dakum, has lamented the acceleration of cancer in the country which 127, 763 new cases are recorded annually alongside 79,542 deaths yearly.

Dakum said cancer is one of the fastest growing killer non-communicable diseases in Nigeria with few diagnose centres where some lack cutting edge equipment and no oncologists.

He said the scarcity of screening, medication centers and oncologists, led to exorbitance in the treatment running into millions of naira which only the rich find it easy to treat, but the poor have to seek help which if little comes by, they end up suffering colossally and dying.

The former Plateau State Commissioner of Health commends the Federal Government of its frantic efforts towards setting up standard cancer diagnose and treatment centres in each of the six Senatorial Zones at tertiary healthcare centres and to be equipped with state of the art equipment in which Jos University Teaching Hospital, JUTH, is one.
Dakum called on State governors too to find a away of replicating same at their Specialist Hospitals to help save lives as cancer is now prevalent particularly breast and prostate cancers.

He further advocated for a billion naira budgetary funding for Cancer Health Fund saying the N150m allocated for the fund is too little in the face of the current hyperinflation, and with close to 200, 000 cancer patients whose treatment is running into millions.
Dakum spoke on the 2025 Cancer Day theme, "United by Unique" saying cancer patients have stories of grief, pain, healing, resilience, love, neglect and many more depending on their situations; hence the theme is advocating patient-centered care in the fight against the disease stating the importance to personalise treatment to each patient's unique needs.

Dakum finally advises all and sundry to pay high attention to their health as it is their wealth, saying they should endeavour to go on medical checkups regularly, exercise to keep fit, eschew dangerous beverages, practice personal hygiene and feed on good diet. With these he said early infection can be dictated for treatment and the body will be kept healthy.

He wished cancer patients fast recuperation and solicited support for them through compassion, love and empathy, as it will grant them the leverage to be strong and fight for their healing.
