Plateau State's Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise Hits a Roadblock on Non Compliance

Despite efforts by the Plateau Environmental Sanitation Agency (PEPSA), the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Plateau State has been met with widespread disregard. On Saturday, March 29, 2025, residents were seen going about their daily activities, ignoring the government's directives to remain indoors and keep their environments clean.

The agency had embarked on massive sensitization efforts prior to the exercise, using loudspeakers mounted on vehicles to inform residents of the need to remain indoors and keep their environments tidy. However, it seemed that these efforts fell on deaf ears, as residents continued with their daily activities, seemingly unaware of the exercise.

The Director of Administration at PEPSA, Izang Pate Dauda, expressed disappointment at the lack of compliance. "This sanitation exercise is being observed every last Saturday of the month," he said. "We are encouraging the entire state to keep their environment clean, which is why we are here today to observe this monthly sanitation."

Dauda noted that while some shops were locked up, many people were seen going about their normal businesses. "We are not happy with this level of compliance," he said. "However, we are optimistic that next month's exercise will see full enforcement, and we will improve on our strategies to ensure a cleaner environment."

Residents blamed the agency for reducing the exercise to "child's play" and for not making it a priority. Others pointed to the lenient penalties for offenders, with fines as low as ₦1,000. "Knowing they can easily pay the fine and be allowed to go, they don't care about the exercise," said one resident.

To address this issue, some residents are calling for stricter penalties, such as increasing the fine to at least ₦5,000 and requiring offenders to participate in environmental sanitation activities. "If the government is serious about maintaining a clean environment, they need to take a tougher stance on offenders," said another resident.

The failure of the March 2025 environmental sanitation exercise highlights the need for a more effective approach to environmental sanitation in Plateau State. As one resident noted, the current situation is "an abysmal failure" that requires urgent attention.
