Gangare, Dilimi, Congo Russia Communities Risk Cholera Outbreak Due to Poor Sanitation Exercise

The Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has warned that several communities in Jos North Local Government Area are at risk of cholera and other epidemics due to citizens' blatant disregard for environmental sanitation.

On Saturday, May 31, 2025, PEPSA officials conducted a monthly environmental sanitation exercise across the state. However, in communities such as Gangare, Congo Russia, Dilimi, and Angwan Rukuba, many residents failed to participate, instead continuing with their daily activities.
Food vendors, tricycle operators, and pedestrians were among those who ignored the exercise, posing health risks to themselves and others. In Gengare community, a bread and tea vendor was arrested for operating his business amidst stagnant water and heaps of garbage.
Pam Barnabas, Director of Enforcement Environmental Sanitation, lamented the nonchalant attitude of the people, despite constant sensitization efforts by PEPSA. He emphasized that environmental sanitation is crucial to preventing epidemics, particularly with the approaching rainy season.
"We didn't derive pleasure in fining people, but where they refuse to adhere to directives, that is where we enforce it on them," Banabas said. Defaulters face fines ranging from ₦1,000 to ₦20,000, depending on the magnitude of their offenses.

Chief Magistrate at the sanitation exercise, Deborah Nyam, justified the fines, stating that ₦1,000 is enough to deter individuals from violating environmental sanitation directives. She emphasized that the goal is for individuals to feel the impact of paying fines, rather than imposing exorbitant amounts.
PEPSA is appealing to citizens to cooperate with the government and participate in environmental sanitation exercises to prevent the outbreak of epidemics. The agency appreciates the efforts of security personnel, agency staff, and journalists in making the exercise a success.
