2023: Christian Coalition Threatens to Withdraw Support For PDP And Atiku Over Wike
A group of Christian organizations has expressed dissatisfaction with the way the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is handling its internal crisis involving Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.
The group stated its position during its National Executive meeting in Abuja, the capital territory where it discussed “The Role of Christians in Politics and Security Management ahead of 2023 General Elections”.
The Christian groups charged whoever becomes the next Nigerian president to be able to address corruption, lack of transparency in government, abject poverty afflicting Nigerians across the country, lack of free and fair elections, massive unemployment, and disregard for the rule of law that has become the norm.
Political participation, integrity, security management, and nation-building issues were discussed at an executive meeting attended by leaders and representatives from fifteen para-church organizations.
The Coalition vehemently opposed the All Progressives Congress’ Muslim-Muslim ticket and warned against the use of religion in campaigns by some politicians in the country.
“We saw PDP as an alternative because APC sealed its house against the Nigeria Christians already. Unfortunately, the way PDP is handling our leader and brother, Governor Wike and his team [Five Governors all Christians] is sending a negative signal to us, we can’t pretend anymore.
“Isaiah 61;8 ‘For I the LORD love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense and I will make an everlasting covenant with them’.
“The Coalition resolves to call a larger meeting in the next few days to take a definite position on our preferred candidate and to encourage each group to organize an enlightenment programme, creating awareness ahead of the elections.
“We are determined to place the interests of the Nigerian people at the heart“ the group said.
The PDP presidential candidate, Atiku is yet to make a public statement regarding the position of the Christian association.
