Chairman Bokkos LGC Promised To Prioritize Education As The LG Gets New Education Secretary

The Bokkos Local Government Council witnessed a significant moment as the outgoing Acting Education Secretary, Hon. Dashi Ladi Mark, officially handed over responsibilities to the incoming Education Secretary, Hon. Jonathan Gawash Regeh, during a well-attended ceremony at the council headquarters.

The event was graced by dignitaries and legislators from both Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas, reflecting the unity and shared commitment to advancing education in the region. Representing the Executive Chairman, Hon. Amalau Samuel Amalau, was his Deputy, Hon. Wallangko Mahwel Joseph.

The outgoing Acting Education Secretary, Hon. Dashi Ladi Mark, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve since her appointment in April. She highlighted key accomplishments during her tenure, including the smooth operation of academic activities, successful supervision of schools, the implementation of school feeding programs, and the provision of learning materials and uniforms through the partnership with Hello International (USA).

Renovation projects were completed in 11 schools, and new classroom constructions are ongoing at four Junior Secondary Schools in Bokkos. Hon. Mark also noted the employment of ad-hoc staff to address staffing shortages.

However, she acknowledged persistent challenges, including insecurity leading to school desertion, overcrowded classrooms, staff shortages, inadequate mobility, and insufficient funding. She urged the council to expedite payment of the new minimum wage and ensure that the Education Secretary is included in key Executive Meetings concerning education.

Hon. Jonathan Gawash Regeh, the incoming Education Secretary, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to serve the people of Bokkos with dedication and transparency. He acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor and vowed to build on her legacy, prioritizing the improvement of education in the region.

Hon. Gawash thanked God, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, stakeholders, and community leaders for their unwavering support. He emphasized his commitment to fostering unity and transparency while addressing the pressing challenges in the education sector.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Wallangko Mahwel Joseph reaffirmed the council’s dedication to improving education. He praised Hon. Dashi Ladi Mark for her exemplary service and welcomed Hon. Gawash as a capable successor.

Hon. Wallangko emphasized the administration’s commitment to fulfilling promises, including addressing teacher wages and ensuring the Education Secretary’s involvement in executive discussions.

He noted that both he and the Executive Chairman, being children of teachers, understand the significance of education and pledged to prioritize its development in Bokkos.

Other stakeholders at the event underscored the importance of continuity and collaboration in improving education:

Mr. Leviticus (NASU Chairman) commended the collaboration between Mangu and Bokkos and praised Hon. Gawash’s transparency and humility.

Mr. Jonah Dukut (NUT Chairman) highlighted the need for immediate action on the minimum wage for teachers.
Mr. Moses A. Lamba (NUT Mangu Chairman) called for better security and a conducive learning environment.

Mr. Njongs R. Moses (Former Education Secretary) stressed the importance of clear communication and consistency in pursuing educational goals.

The handing-over ceremony signaled a renewed focus on education in Bokkos Local Government Area. With the continued support of stakeholders and the commitment of local government leadership, efforts to improve education infrastructure, teacher welfare, and learning environments are expected to yield positive results for the community.
