By Nanzing Zingkong, Jos
Honourable Daniel Nanbol Listick, the member representing Langtang North Central State Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, has raised a motion calling for the reactivation and sustainable celebration of the Plateau Festival of Arts and Culture (PLAFEST). The motion was presented during plenary today, Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
In his motion, Honourable Listick emphasized the cultural, economic, and social benefits of celebrating PLAFEST. He highlighted Plateau State’s vast cultural heritage and tourism potential, noting that the state is home to numerous attractions across its Local Government Areas. He stressed that celebrating PLAFEST would help showcase these resources, boost the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and reduce dependency on federal allocations.
Honourable Listick proposed that the festival not only showcase Plateau's rich cultural heritage but also serve as a tool for promoting tourism. He pointed out that the event could attract international support for strengthening Plateau’s cultural tourism policies, thus driving economic growth and fostering peace.
The Honourable member also suggested that the 2024 edition of PLAFEST be celebrated in December or the first quarter of 2025, with a theme focused on peace, unity, and social justice. According to him, this theme would help heal the wounds of past conflicts and unite Plateau people as well as the nation.
In his motion, Honourable Listick made the following resolutions:
1. A Call on the Plateau State Government to direct the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Hospitality to activate and sustain the annual celebration of PLAFEST.
2. A Call for Adequate Funding for the 2024/2025 edition of PLAFEST and subsequent editions.
3. Encouraging Public and Civil Servants to embrace and showcase Plateau's rich cultural heritage by wearing traditional attire once a week during the month of the PLAFEST celebration.
The motion was met with broad support from fellow lawmakers, who acknowledged the importance of promoting Plateau’s cultural and tourism assets. The lawmakers also recognized the power of culture in fostering peace and social harmony, essential for sustainable development in the state.
The motion is set to be deliberated further, with a potential vote in the coming days. If approved, the reactivation of PLAFEST could become a key fixture in the state’s cultural calendar, fostering both national and international tourism, and promoting peace and unity in Plateau State.
