As the World marks Diabetes Day today, November 14, 2024, the Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Human Virology Nigeria, IHVN, and Professor of Public Health, School of Medicine, Maryland University, Baltimore in USA, Prof. Patrick Sunday Dakum, has tasked governments at all levels to pay serious attention to diabetes and introduce pragmatic measures in combating it, saying the disease has attended pandemic level in the country killing by far more people than tuberculosis and AIDS.

Speaking on the 2024 theme: "Access to Diabetes Care: Prevention and Management for All", Dakum lamented that so many patients of diabetes are dying and finding it very difficult to treat themselves because of the exorbitant prices of the drugs, treatment and good food meant for patients.

According to him the drugs prices have raised to over 400% not to mention the cost of dialysis and foods such as beans, Acha, and Basmati rice.

The former Commissioner of Health and Information, added that the record of tested diabetic patients in the country is over nine million and those untested are unknown which can be more or less than the nine million by virtue of consuming diets high in calories, fat, and cholesterol which make the body resistance to insulin. Others are age, poor exercise, genetic and so on.

The Plateau State Labour Party governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections, called on the government to as a matter of urgency secure formidable health insurance scheme for diabetic patients, alleviate the treatment for them by making it free as in the case of Tuberculosis, HIV and Leprosy, or subsidize drugs price by 80%; and to cut down drastically the prices of food to enable patients feed well.
He further called on all citizens to constantly test their health status, engage in physical exercises, reduce the intake of carbonated drinks, alcohol and foods rich in calories and cholesterol.
Dakum extorted that health is everybody's wealth, and without sound health nobody will effectively go about their daily chores, therefore, individuals should endeavour to always know their sugar level, be tested of hepatitis, HIV and embark on general check-up, and if there is a problem, medical attention should quickly be sought.
Finally he wishes diabetic patients financial open doors and fast recovery, advising them to strictly adhere to treatment rules and regulations to stay longer, and to never be faint hearted or give up by loosing hope; saying they can make it.
