Jos - The Plateau State Local Government Service Commission has convened a 3-day training workshop for directors of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.
The workshop, which is on going at the Sarau Event Cenre, behind Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat Jos, aimed to step down the policies and vision of the Executive Governor, Barr Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, to the local government technocrats.
According to the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Chief Simon Tangni, the vision, tagged "Plateau may shine," was unveiled at a retreat about 2-3 weeks prior to the workshop. Chief Tangni emphasized the importance of carrying the local government technocrats along in implementing the policies, as they are the engine room of policy implementation.
"We saw that it wasn't enough for us to just have that one week of retreat at the level of executive of boards, parastatals and commissions," Chief Tangni explained. "We felt that we needed to step down the policies to those who implement the policy, and for them to implement those policies, you need to carry them on board."
Chief Tangni emphasized that the local government technocrats are the custodians of policy implementation, and therefore, it is essential to carry them along in implementing the policies.
In his message to the participants, Chief Tangni encouraged them to take the vision and mission back to their various local governments and implement the policies. He emphasized the need for a new workforce, motivated workforce, and renewed working spirit in each and every one of them.
The facilitator of the workshop, Dr. Paul Alaje, Chief Economist with SPM Professionals, highlighted that the training focused on three key areas: economic rebirth, physical infrastructure, and security and good governance. These areas are crucial in achieving the state government's vision of making Plateau State shine.
Dr. Alaje explained that the economic rebirth aspect involves revitalizing the economy of the state, with a focus on local government areas. The physical infrastructure aspect includes the development of rural roads, primary healthcare facilities, and other essential infrastructure that impacts the daily lives of citizens.
The security and good governance aspect focuses on ensuring the safety and security of citizens, while also promoting good governance practices. This includes addressing issues related to corruption, accountability, and transparency in government.
The participants were seen taking notes and asking questions during the workshop, indicating their enthusiasm and commitment to implementing the policies.
The workshop is expected to have a positive impact on the implementation of the state government's policies and programs at the local government level. As the state government continues to work towards achieving its vision of making Plateau State shine, the role of the local government technocrats cannot be overstated. With the training workshop, the state government is taking a step in the right direction by empowering the technocrats with the knowledge and skills needed to implement the policies effectively.
