Gunmen have killed three people and destroyed property worth millions of naira in Makabat Batura District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. The gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias attacked the community through the hills in the area at about 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and molested residents, who were caught off guard and subjected to all manner of humiliation. A youth leader in the community who craved for anonymity said the attackers who had laid siege to the community killed a woman, her son, and another man in the village. EFCC Chair, Bawa Moves to Avoid Jail, Appeals Court Ruling

AbdulRasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has appealed the contempt of court verdict handed down to him by the Abuja High Court. The EFCC boss disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking with journalists at the House of Representatives. Recall that the Court had ordered him to be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Facility until he purges himself of the contempt. The Court gave the Judgment following the EFCC refusal to return N40 million and a Range Rover SUV to Director of Operations at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Rufus Ojuawo. “Having continued wilfully in disobedience to the order of this court, he should be committed to prison at Kuje Correctional Centre for his disobedience, and continued disobedience of the said order of court made on November 21st, 2018, until he purges himself of the contempt,” Justice Chizoba Orji had ordered. However, Bawa said the verdict has been appealed already.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama has convicted the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa for contempt of court in relation to his agency’s failure to comply with an earlier order of the court. The national body of ASUU suspended its eight-month-old strike on October 14, 2022, following a court order directing union members to resume lectures and an intervention by the House of Representatives leadership. Part of the agreement the union reached with the leadership of the House of Representatives was that 50 per cent of members’ eight months withheld salaries would be paid. ASUU had asked its members across universities not to return to class, having been paid half salaries for October. INEC Restrict RECs from Visiting Government Houses, Meeting Politicians

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday, prohibited Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from paying visits to government houses and meeting politicians in their States of assignments. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who gave the order in his remarks at the swearing-in ceremony of 19 RECs in Abuja, yesterday, charged the electoral officials to be responsible. Mahmood also reiterated his commitment to ensure free and fair elections in the 2023 polls, pledging that the commission will not disappoint Nigerians. According to him, the electorate via their votes would determine winners for the elections, reiterating that its loyalty and allegiance would be to the country and its citizens. Buhari Appoints Bupwatda as JUTH CMD

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Pokop Bupwatda as the new Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday. Mr Bupwatda’s appointment was conveyed in a letter signed by health minister Osagie Ehanire. The letter said the appointment was effective from August 30 and would run for an initial tenure of four years. Gunmen on Monday night killed the village head of Nyalun community of Wase Local Government Area of Plateau, Salisu Idris. It was gathered that two other residents were also killed during the attack.
